I have fond memories of sitting under the kitchen table as a young child, as my mother and her friends would be sewing. I have used sewing to make many three-dimensional pieces of artwork, and I wanted to transfer the tactile surface of my three-dimensional work to a two-dimensional surface. The works are inviting to be touched, the way it's hard to resist having your hand slide over a quilt, or a lush piece of cloth in the fabric store. In an effort to create a soft bas-relief, I started using batting and sewing simple outlines on the sewing machine. I intended to paint the entire surface, with the pattern showing through occasionally, but felt the line drawings were powerful enough on their own in some of the pieces.

These pieces all contain two people in close relationship to each other. A handshake by two business people can have a serious effect on the financial and social situation of many. In 'development', two men are shaking hands with houses floating around their heads. It's my interpretation of the many deals that must be made around Columbus with the enormous amount of developments popping up around the city. It may just be a simple handshake between two people, but it could also have a large effect on the people and wildlife living in the area.
